Tackling contemporary challenges related to land use and environmental management requires collaboration between local groups, scientists and engineers, policymakers, and Indigenous community stakeholders. This presents a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers, including Indigenous scientists, to engage with and elevate the concerns of Indigenous and tribal communities in local decision-making; however, many non-Indigenous scientists and engineers lack the knowledge to engage in this way. This session will feature scientists and Indigenous leaders working at the forefront of local policies that address land and environmental issues. With concrete examples from our panelists and the introduction of Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally engagement resources, this session will help attendees better understand the ways that local and tribal governments function so they can more impactfully engage in their communities.
