This presentation was delivered as part of the Tribal Lands and Environment Forum: Virtual Gathering in August 2020 by Jason Helgeson Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Elizabeth Wakeman Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Melisa Devincenzi and Rosita Clarke USEPA, and Maggie Egbarts KSU Tribal TAB.
A tribe’s guide to understanding the steps involved to complete a successful cleanup and prepare a site for redevelopment. The process begins with site identification and prioritization followed by assessment and cleanup planning which leads to cleanup and subsequent redevelopment. Attendees will be guided through each step with detailed descriptions of “how to” that will pave the way forward to the next step. In addition, tribes will learn about other resources, i.e., EPA’s Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) program and applying for U.S. EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grants, that may be leveraged to enhance existing programs and fill funding gaps. The steps to successful brownfields cleanup and redevelopment will be further highlighted by tribes sharing their experiences and success stories. Pre-recorded videos will be provided as resources that participants will be encouraged to watch prior to the session to allow more time for open Q&A dialogue.
