Recycling contamination has recently become a global concern. High rates of contaminated recycling mixed with recent closures of banned imports has demanded a desperate need for cleaner recycling. A lack of persistent education has also led to contamination issues and confusion when it comes to the recycling processes. While we can visually see progress in the overall concept of recycling (collected data), we also recognize a lack of proper education when it comes to recyclability. The
Modoc Nation is working towards decreasing contamination by developing a line
of clear, concise communication for its citizens. This presentation will give an overview of the Modoc Nations Recycling program and its efforts in developing a standardized education program. The presenter will be highlighting the highs and lows, lessons learned, and the work still to be accomplished. In addition, the presentation’s main focus will be sharing data compiled from performing waste composition studies from three sources; drop-off recycling, hub and spoke, and the non-recycler.
