This presentation was delivered as part of the Tribal Lands and Environment Forum: Virtual Gathering in August 2021 by Mark Junker with the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and Jessica Young with the US EPA.
Lithium-ion batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines are critical components of a clean energy future and, in the case of batteries, all facets of digital life. Representatives from US EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery, EPA’s waste office, will discuss the management challenges and regulatory landscape of these emerging wastes when they reach the ends of their lives. The presentation includes a discussion of the chemical make-up and design of these materials, what regulations apply to them when they are discarded or recycled, and EPA’s current actions regarding them. EPA will also identify sources of more information and take questions from attendees.
