Audience: All Alaska Tribes and Tribes in the lower 48 where a hub and spoke model for recycling could apply. This session will give an overview and current update of the Backhaul Alaska program. This is a free program for rural Alaska communities - it coordinates free backhaul of hazardous wastes on a statewide basis (particularly in areas where backhaul logistics are difficult and expensive). Through the program, Tribes/communities receive free backhaul training, backhaul supplies, equipment, and assistance with arranging the shipping of materials. It also covers the costs of shipping and recycling of the materials. This is a program that has developed over time and the model could be applicable to rural Tribes in the lower 48 that could take advantage of a hub and spoke system. The program utilizes regional backhaul/recycling coordinators, local community coordinators, and a statewide coordinator/control tower to provide the most efficient services. We will give the presentation using powerpoint and will also engage the audience (particularly those from Alaska) in a feedback session to find out where the greatest stumbling blocks are for Tribes trying to backhaul/recycle hazardous wastes and how the program can help. Will also give a brief overview of Zender's free technical assistance and training program for rural communities, and a brief overview of the Solid Waste Alaska Taskforce. Free resources will be shared for backhaul, hazardous wastes, and training.
