More frequent extreme weather events, aging utility infrastructure, and proactive utility public safety shutoff events are putting tribal communities at risk of more frequent and longer power outages. Some tribal communities are now regularly experiencing outages that last for days or even weeks. Other tribal communities may have limited, highly unreliable, or no electricity for some or all of their lands. Communities can install microgrids to keep homes, buildings, and facilities powered when electricity from the grid is unavailable. Microgrids can also save energy costs on an ongoing basis. In this session we will discuss how to evaluate, plan, and implement a successful microgrid project for your community and the speaker will share case studies of microgrid initiatives from three tribes in Southern California.
