Annually the Virgil Masayesva Environmental Excellence Award is presented to an individual or program who is doing exceptional work in Indian Country. Along with presentation of the award, there will be a culture performance from the Muscogee Creek Nation. The late Virgil Masayesva was a member of the Hopi tribe, and co-founder of ITEP. He worked tirelessly to champion education and tribal sovereignty as cornerstones for tribal self-determination. This year two awards will be presented to: Bill Thompson, Penobscot Nation; and Frank Spurgeon, La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians.
